One of Bhutan's most iconic and spiritually charged festivals, the Jambay Lhakhang Drup unfolds at the ancient Jambay Lhakhang — a 7th-century temple believed to have been built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to subdue a demoness across the Himalayas. Over several days, the monastery courtyard becomes a vivid stage for sacred cham dances, elaborate silk costumes, and rituals that honor Guru Rinpoche's legacy. The highlight of the festival is the famous Tercham, or "Naked Dance," performed at night around a blazing fire. This ancient ritual, intended to bless the infertile and ward off evil, embodies Bhutan's deep connection to symbolism, courage, and spiritual renewal. Combined with fire rituals, masked dances, and vibrant community participation, the Jambay Lhakhang Drup offers an unforgettable immersion into Bhutan's mystical and timeless cultural world.
