A rewarding three-day journey through Bumthang's cultural and spiritual heartland, named for the soft hoots of owls echoing through the night forests along ancient yak trails. Visit the 14th-century Tharpaling Monastery, a renowned Dzogchen meditation center, and Choedrak Hermitage where Guru Rinpoche himself meditated.
Drive from Jakar to Manchugang trailhead. Trek 6-7km (4-5 hours) through Dhur Village (2,900m), one of Bumthang's largest and most culturally vibrant settlements home to Kheps and Brokpas communities. Ascend through blue pine forests past an old water-powered flour mill. Continue through spruce, hemlock, and rhododendron to Schonath campsite (3,450m). Evening owl calls create enchanting forest atmosphere.
