The classic trek to the base of Mount Jomolhari (7,326m), Bhutan's most sacred and iconic peak, revered as the 'Goddess of the Mountain.' Journey through pristine wilderness in Jigme Dorji National Park, camp at the legendary Jangothang base camp with Jomolhari towering above, cross the high passes of Nyile La (4,830m) and Yali La (4,820m), and visit the remote Lingshi village and its ancient dzong ruins. A demanding but unforgettable 128km traverse ending in Thimphu.
Drive to Shana Zampa trailhead. Trek 22km (7-8 hours) through Jigme Dorji National Park along the Paro Chhu river valley. Pass through blue pine forests, cross wooden bridges, and pass army checkpost. Camp at Soi Thangthangkha (3,610m). Camps are carefully chosen for their beauty beside alpine lakes, under the watch of ancient glaciers, or in sweeping highland pastures and meadows.
Trek 19km (5-6 hours) ascending gradually through yak pastures with first views of Mt. Jomolhari. Cross glacial streams and pass yak herder camps. Arrive at spectacular Jangothang base camp (4,080m) with Jomolhari towering above. Camps are carefully chosen for their beauty beside alpine lakes, under the watch of ancient glaciers, or in sweeping highland pastures and meadows.
Acclimatization day at Jangothang. Optional hike to Tsho Phu twin lakes or explore the ruins of the old fortress. Watch for blue sheep on the surrounding slopes and enjoy spectacular views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drake peaks. Trek 17km crossing Neyle La Pass (4,830m) with panoramic views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tserim Kang. Descend to the remote Lingshi village (4,010m), one of the most isolated communities in Bhutan. Visit Lingshi Dzong ruins. Every pass crossed and every valley descended carries a cultural story that deepens your experience far beyond the trail.
Trek 22km crossing Yali La Pass (4,820m), the trek's highest point with 360-degree views of the Himalayan ranges. Long descent through rhododendron and juniper forests to Shodu camp (4,080m) beside a rushing stream. Camps are carefully chosen for their beauty beside alpine lakes, under the watch of ancient glaciers, or in sweeping highland pastures and meadows.
Trek 16km through narrowing valley with dense vegetation. Follow the Thimphu Chhu river downstream, crossing suspension bridges and passing through bamboo groves. Camp at Domshisa (3,710m) in a beautiful forest clearing. Camps are carefully chosen for their beauty beside alpine lakes, under the watch of ancient glaciers, or in sweeping highland pastures and meadows.
Final trek 16km descending through broadleaf forest to Dolam Kencho where vehicles await. Drive to Thimphu to celebrate trek completion. Optional visits to Buddha Point or Thimphu's weekend market. These ancient footpaths once used by herders, traders, pilgrims, and monks now offer a rare chance to walk through one of the last untouched mountain sanctuaries on earth.
