A rare cultural immersion and nature-focused journey through the remote subtropical valleys of Trongsa and Zhemgang districts. Trek through warm lowland forests rich with golden langurs and hornbills, cross suspension bridges over rushing rivers, and stay with the Monpa community, believed to be among the earliest settlers of Bhutan. Visit Nabji Lhakhang with its sacred stone pillar marking an ancient peace treaty, and experience traditional ceremonies rarely witnessed by outsiders.
Drive 45 minutes from Trongsa to Tongtongphey trailhead. Trek 8km (4 hours) descending to Mangde Chhu River and crossing suspension bridge - prime Golden Langur spotting area. Pass through Monpa settlements clinging to hillsides. Camp at Jangbi Village (1,500m) with sweeping views of Mangde Chhu basin. Camps are carefully chosen for their beauty beside alpine lakes, under the watch of ancient glaciers, or in sweeping highland pastures and meadows.
Trek 13km (6 hours) - the most demanding day with steep ascents and descents. Explore Jangbi Village and visit local orchid garden with 75 native species. Pass sacred stone imprints believed to be Guru Rinpoche's footprints. Visit Phumzur Village temple and continue through Lekpogang Village. Camp at Kudra (1,400m) with views of Nyimshong Village and Zhemgang Dzong. Camps are carefully chosen for their beauty beside alpine lakes, under the watch of ancient glaciers, or in sweeping highland pastures and meadows.
Trek 12km (6 hours) through subtropical wilderness, crossing streams and waterfalls. Spot Himalayan squirrels, rhesus macaques, and various birds. Arrive at picturesque Nabji Village with traditional welcome at the sacred tree. Explore sacred sites including stone bell created by Guru Rinpoche and split rock near Nabji Lhakhang. Here, the mountains are not just scenery - they are revered protectors, home to guardian deities and sacred legends.
Trek 4km (1.5-2 hours) through rice paddies. Visit Nabji Lhakhang with sacred stone pillar bearing thumb imprints of two warring kings - left by Guru Rinpoche as peace symbol. Climb to Korphu Village perched dramatically on mountaintop. Experience traditional Chipdrel procession, Marchang ceremony, and Tashi Labey dance. Visit temple with Pema Lingpa sacred relics. Here, the mountains are not just scenery - they are revered protectors, home to guardian deities and sacred legends.
Drive 100km (6 hours) back to Trongsa through forested hills, river valleys, and rural settlements. Stop at Kinga Rabten Palace, winter residence of Bhutan's Second King. Enjoy views of Taktse Goemba, cascading waterfalls, and terraced rice fields along the Mangde Chhu Valley. These ancient footpaths once used by herders, traders, pilgrims, and monks now offer a rare chance to walk through one of the last untouched mountain sanctuaries on earth.
